Just another normal day,
Ho-hum, mundane,
Gotta get my work done.
Walk inside and catch a ride,
Up ninety floors to my office,
Monotonous boredom.
Sit down, grab some papers,
Flick on the computer, get to work.
Tap, tap, tap.
Nothing felt strange.
Check my watch, 8:30,
Time to get some coffee.
Get up, walk down the hall,
Wave hello to my co-workers.
"Fine day, isn’t it, yes?"
"Love your new do, Charlotte!"
Grab a cup, check again, 8:40,
Gotta get back to work.
Clomp, clomp, clomp,
Footsteps down the hall,
Nothing seemed wrong.
Sit back down, go back to work—
BOOM!
Look up in alarm, what was that?
Fear lights my eyes,
The floor opens up,
Fire spewing out like Hell had opened
It’s great, gaping mouth upon us.
A plane plows through below,
The anguished eyes of a passenger
Looking out before they were
Incinerated in the chaos.
Heart pounding, brain racing,
Scared for myself.
Nowhere to go, nowhere to hide,
Screaming at the heat.
People run, trying to flee,
Finding nowhere to go
But down…down…
Fire comes, white hot now,
Closer and closer to the window I move.
Open it, lean out, not even thinking…
Yes! I’m free, freefalling,
Down, far from the fire,
As the calming peace of
The pavement comes rushing to
Greet me with open arms.
I close my eyes, and offer
A prayer, for those inside…
And for my soul.
